WE HAVE WONDERFUL ARTISTS AT ST. JOHN SCHOOL!
GIANT FLOWERS using OIL PASTELS
Inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe
Students selected images of flowers, cropped the image to reveal an interesting part of the flower and used oil pastels to create a color illustration of the flower. Their "famous artist inspiration" came from the work of Georgia O'Keeffe - American 1887-1986. Georgia O'Keeffe is recognized internationally for her abstract and close-up paintings of nature. These pastel flowers are beautiful. Click PLAY (on the top left of the pink flower) and sit back and watch the slide show!
GRID PORTRAITS using a VALUE SCALE
Students selected a photograph of a classmate and created a pencil portrait of their classmate using the grid method. Students used math and proportions to render the photographic image of their classmate. Drawing a grid on the photograph and another identical grid on their drawing paper allowed student to focus on smaller sections of the photograph and reproduce the photograph in proportion and detail. Students used a variety of hard and soft pencils, cross-hatching, blending and shading to complete their work.
American artist Chuck Close is well-known for his large scale portraits created using the grid method. To learn more about Chuck Close and his work click on his name in green.

POP ART SHOES
Pop Art is short for POPULAR ART and it is an art style that was started in the 1950's by artists who felt that the style of art at that time was too serious. These 'Pop" artists drew their inspiration from everyday items and everyday culture - images from comic strips or simple everyday objects became 'art'.
Our grade 6 artists removed one of their shoes and created a 'pop art' illustration of their shoe. The illustration began as a pencil drawing, was transferred 4 times into a grid using tracing paper and graphite to reproduce the shoe drawing exactly and finally colored with markers using a repeating and alternating pattern of 5 colors. The final pieces are terrific! |
Animals in Shades of Black
Students completed a unit about drawing from photographs using a range of pencils (B, HB, H). Their "famous artist inspiration" came from Albrecht Durer, a German printmaker and illustrator (1471-1528).

DECADES PROJECT
Students selected a decade of 20th century US history and used internet sites and library print sources to investigate the culture and historical significance of that period in time. Their research was organized into a timeline with photographs. The final project was a mural (30in. x 40in.), painted by student teams using acrylics. These murals are wonderful examples of student creativity and exploration!
